Negative Thinking Habits

Negative automatic thoughts (NATs) are spontaneous, often habitual, thoughts that arise in response to situations or triggers.

They tend to be self-defeating and repetitive, contributing to stress, burnout, anxiety, or low mood. Examples might include:

  • "I’ll never be able to complete this project on time."

  • "I’m not good enough to handle this."

  • "Everyone else is better at this than I am."

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) combines CBT with hypnosis to increase awareness of these thought cycles, challenge their validity, and reframe them into more constructive, positive patterns. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) supports recognising thoughts without being controlled by them, encouraging purposeful action in line with personal values. Schema Therapy works at a deeper level, addressing the underlying core beliefs and long-standing patterns that fuel negative thinking, making change more sustainable.

Working in this way can help:

  • Reduce repetitive, self-critical thinking

  • Develop healthier behaviours and coping strategies

  • Lower stress and improve overall wellbeing

  • Transform underlying beliefs that maintain negative cycles
